Smart lighting management and digital services via networked luminaires

TRILUX luminaires

Project

The Internet of Things significantly extends the functionalities of conventional LED lights. This project put TRILUX in a position where it is able to offer its customers innovative digital services based on smart lighting systems. Working closely with the luminaire manufacturer, adesso developed an IoT cloud solution for pioneering digital services.

Luminaires equipped with sensors provide valuable information that can be used to create new business models such as pay-per-use and deliver value-added digital services for end customers.

Highlights of the project

Predictive maintenance and digital energy monitoring

Data on the networked luminaires is continuously collected and evaluated via the central IoT solution to facilitate predictive maintenance and smart lighting management.

Developing new business models

TRILUX is able to develop new business models thanks to the data available to it. This allowed them to create full-service and pay-per-use offerings built around the data and the accompanying non-stop monitoring of the status of a lighting infrastructure.

Expanding the portfolio with the addition of digital services

The proliferation of digitalisation has enabled TRILUX to develop new, paid services outside the lighting segment. These include, for example, services in and around indoor navigation, room bookings and automated emergency lighting checks.

Goals

  • To develop digital business models based on luminaires
  • To optimise maintenance and servicing for service providers and TRILUX alike
  • To generate insights from collected data for use in future service/product development

Concept

  • Build a central, integrated IoT solution
  • Option to book the IoT service via existing access options (central customer portal)
  • Options ranging from full-service packages to pay-per-use

Technology

  • IoT platform as the framework
  • Implementation of the target architecture on Microsoft Azure
  • Angular as the frontend technology

Our services

  • Developing the technical concept
  • Agile cloud development
  • Operating and further developing the IoT cloud solution

In the digitalisation era, luminaires do more than just provide light. In concepts like smart building, the lighting infrastructure is also now networked and hence ‘smart’ – thanks to TRILUX at the latest. The luminaire manufacturer, based in Arnsberg, Germany, sees itself as a pioneer and driver of digitalisation in its sector.
