Digital Design in Practice

Carl Remigius Fresenius Education AG

Carl Remigius Fresenius Education AG (CRFE) was already undergoing a comprehensive transformation at all levels. For this reason, the company decided to launch the “OneGroup.Digital” program with the support of adesso to meet the requirements of a modern, digital higher education organization. The program included various milestones, including the introduction of a digital student platform (student file).

Challenge

The initial challenge was that student files were physically locked away in filing cabinets, and not everyone had access to them at all times. Furthermore, different data and formats for the same person existed in various locations, making it difficult for the organization, faculty, and especially students to manage the files smoothly.

Solution Approach

Together with the Product Owner from CRFE, adesso developed a digitization strategy that methodically and strategically designed the digitization of student files and the associated processes. The project was divided into three phases: scoping, prototyping, and implementation. The digital design framework was used in Phase 1—with methodological support from adesso digital designers and innovation guides as well as stakeholders on the CRFE side—to define the objectives, understand the problem, map out the value proposition and requirements, develop future scenarios, and present the rough concept internally to secure buy-in and resources for Phase 2.

toom Baumarkt GmbH

toom Baumarkt GmbH (toom) wanted to realign its customer services and support them with technological innovations. In the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, calls to toom’s service center had risen sharply, which is why toom sought to improve the customer experience and the work of service staff through technological innovations and associated scalable solutions. A high degree of innovation was a key component of the project.

Herausforderung

Fundamentally, the project was intended to support the customer-oriented development of (technical) prototypes to assist the central customer service team. To this end, the first step involved identifying the right future-oriented questions, topics, potentials, and relevant use cases, as well as designing ideas and initial solution or system approaches, the relevance of which was validated with the customer base using Sketch or click-through prototypes.

Solution Approach

For visioning and ideation, adesso Digital Designers collaborated with toom Baumarkt to visualize the current situation of customers and service agents using various innovation frameworks—such as Service Design and Design Thinking—in the form of customer journeys, touchpoint analysis, and experience maps. Based on the information gathered from workshops and interviews, numerous ideas were subsequently generated that offer significant value for the daily work of customers and agents.

The individual phases were supported by the use of graphic recording and prototyping to reduce complexity and to test and improve the quality of ideas even in the early stages.
