KKH – Strategic partnership in the Jump|ng transformation programme

KKH in transition: rethinking care

With around 1.5 million policyholders, the Kaufmännische Krankenkasse (KKH)is a statutory health insurance fund operating nationwide. Through the Jump|ng programme, it is driving forward the largest IT and organisational transformation in its history: the replacement of the existing BVS inventory management system with the statutory health insurance standard BITMARCK_21c|ng, including all peripheral systems and online services. adesso has been supporting the KKH since November 2022 as a strategic implementation partner across all key areas.

  • “With the Jump|ng programme, we have successfully undertaken the largest IT transformation in KKH’s history. adesso not only provided us with professional and technical support, but, as a reliable partner with industry expertise and strong implementation capabilities, also made a significant contribution to the success of this modernisation.”
Benjamin Berger – Programme Manager Jump|ng, KKH Kaufmännische Krankenkasse

The challenges of a holistic transformation

Jump|ng presents KKH with closely interlinked challenges that go far beyond a traditional system change:

  • Complex data migration: Complete, audit-proof transfer of legacy data from the BVS to BITMARCK_21c|ng – without disrupting day-to-day health insurance operations.
  • Architectural and operational transformation: New architectural patterns, a robust operational organisation and the integration of numerous peripheral systems into a consistent target architecture.
  • Integration of critical peripheral systems: Seamlessly integrating sales, billing, benefits and telematics solutions with the new core system.
  • Quality and release readiness: Professional test management and a high degree of test automation as the foundation for stability, compliance and delivery readiness.
  • Digital policyholder services: Modern online services and a seamless customer journey – from application submission through to claims settlement.
  • Data-driven management: Robust analysis and reporting structures for the data-driven further development of business and service delivery processes.

Tailor-made support from adesso

With over 20,000 person-days of work, adesso is supporting KKH end-to-end, from architecture and migration right through to business projects and policyholder services. The scope of services includes:

  • Data migration: Setting up functional migration paths, from specification through development to continuous testing across multiple migration runs, culminating in the production cut-over migration.
  • Architecture and operations: Setting up a modern hybrid cloud platform, automated provisioning of environments (Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD), as well as taking over operations and providing hypercare following go-live.
  • Integration of peripheral systems: Integration of various critical peripheral systems to expand the functional scope of services as required, using standardised services and adapters.
  • Test management and quality assurance: Development of a programme-wide test strategy, implementation of regression and integration tests, as well as migration and load tests to ensure a stable release process.
  • Online services and portals: Further development of the policyholder and employer portals using the white-label app in accordance with the BITMARCK standard to ensure a consistent digital customer experience.
  • Document management: Integration and migration of the DMS, connection to the new core processes, and ensuring compliance with audit-proof filing and retention requirements.
  • Data analytics and management: Establishment of a consolidated reporting system for migration progress, business functions and operations, as well as laying the foundations for data-driven care management.
  • Specialist projects and support: Support in numerous specialist projects to ensure the needs-based implementation of regulatory requirements under the Social Code (SGB) and telematics.

  • “What sets Jump|ng apart is its combination of in-depth expertise in the statutory health insurance system and technological implementation capabilities. It is particularly evident in the closely integrated peripheral systems – such as document management – that a successful migration does not end with the core system. For me, developing this end-to-end perspective in collaboration with KKH was the key factor in our success.”
Nils Mirbach – adesso SE, Project Manager Document Management

A forward-looking partnership for the digital KKH

The collaboration between KKH and adesso goes beyond a simple service provision and establishes a partnership-based alliance with measurable results:

  • Successful platform transformation: With Jump|ng, KKH is migrating from its in-house BVS system to the GKV standard BITMARCK_21c|ng – the foundation for a future-proof IT landscape that is interoperable across the industry.
  • Support for programme management: A well-coordinated delivery organisation, clear governance and continuous migration testing provided KKH with planning certainty on the path to go-live.
  • Faster response to market and regulatory changes: The modernised platform and automated release processes enable KKH to implement regulatory requirements and new healthcare initiatives more quickly.
  • Improved customer experience: Modernised online services, consistent app integration and end-to-end processes enhance the satisfaction of KKH’s approximately 1.5 million policyholders and strengthen the company’s competitive position.
  • Data-driven management: Consolidated reporting and analytics provide senior management and specialist departments with reliable performance indicators – ranging from migration progress to the impact on care provision.
  • Sustainable capacity-building: Knowledge transfer, co-sourcing models and the strengthening of internal teams ensure that KKH retains its long-term capacity to act once the programme has ended.

By combining sector-specific expertise in the statutory health insurance sector, technological excellence and a partnership-based approach, adesso is making a substantial contribution to the success of Jump|ng – and thus to KKH’s strategic reorientation as a digital, policyholder-focused health insurance provider.

From its headquarters in Hanover, the long-established supplementary health insurance fund KKH manages an annual budget of around 8.7 billion euros. Across Germany, some 4,000 staff at over 100 regional service centres provide members with advice directly in their local areas. In addition to standard and supplementary healthcare benefits, the fund is actively committed to combating billing fraud within the healthcare system.
