adesso develops new website for the city of Dortmund

The city of Dortmund has completely revamped its online presence with expert assis-tance from the IT service provider adesso. Citizens can now enjoy a modern website design and an optimised user experience, offering a range of content that is quicker and easier to find.

Relaunched dortmund.de faster, clearer and more informative

Dortmund has maintained its own online presence since 1995, making a number of minor ad-justments over time. Last year, the city authorities decided to completely redesign the website, replacing the clunky platform that featured a nondescript design and outdated technology. Thanks to the experts from adesso’s Digital Experience (DX) division, dortmund.de was fully revamped within a year.

New and simpler structure for dortmund.de

The relaunch of dortmund.de places the needs of its users front and centre. The old website was a static platform based on the city authorities’ organisational structure, and was difficult for many citizens to navigate through. The new build has just five menu items and a brand-new internal search engine, ensuring that visitors arrive at the information they need more quickly.

The website operates using the content management system FirstSpirit and, with links to the cloud and a hybrid headless architecture, features cutting-edge technology. The platform has been implemented as a strictly mobile-first, responsive design.

Lord Mayor of Dortmund Thomas Westphal is impressed by the new website and the partner-ship with adesso SE, which was founded in the city in 1997: “With the relaunch of dort-mund.de, we have achieved our core objective of offering citizens the best possible service. Finding information is now a much simpler and quicker process, and the modern design and state-of-the-art technology is the cherry on top. We are delighted to have realised this project together with a local partner with strong roots in our city.”

Relaunched dortmund.de more sustainable

Aside from the user experience and the new design, the project partners pursued a number of other goals with the relaunch, including focusing on the sustainability and future viability of the website. The new dark mode cuts loading times, while the elimination of unnecessarily large images reduces carbon emissions. The website is also well equipped to handle technical in-novations further down the line, with new interfaces to future systems.

“We are very proud of the new dortmund.de,” said Soeren Spoo, Head of Communications for the city of Dortmund. “The website has well and truly exceeded our expectations, and much of that is down to adesso. Instead of delivering a turnkey solution, adesso challenged us again and again to make our online presence even better. The result is a platform that raises the bar when it comes to local authority websites.”

Besides the relaunch of dortmund.de, adesso is currently also working on another high-profile website project in the city: in partnership with Borussia Dortmund, the IT service provider is busy transforming BVB.de into a digital hub for fans and visitors from all over the world.
