adesso and XU launch digital learning programme focusing on sustainability

IT service provider adesso and training partner XU Group are now offering a compact learning programme all about digital sustainability through the online education and exchange platform XU School of Sustainability. With sustainable business set to shape the future, the online training course is geared towards companies keen to improve their employees’ knowledge and skills in the area of sustainability and digitalisation.

Under new EU legislation such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), companies will soon be obliged to conduct their business in an ecologically and socially sustainable manner. Training and learning partners adesso and XU believe that the subjects of digitalisation and sustainability should be addressed in parallel, as only then can companies maximise the innovation and sustainability potential of digitalisation while reducing the risks of digitalisation to the environment and society as a whole.

If the pace at which processes and applications are being digitalised continues unabated, forecasts indicate that data processing could account for 14 % of global emissions by 2040, equivalent to the amount currently generated by the United States. Considering sustainability from start to finish – throughout the digital transformation process, from design and implementation all the way through to operations and end-of-life strategies – is essential to any efforts to reduce the digital economy’s carbon footprint and make the industry greener.

Learning about digital sustainability

Digital processes and IT infrastructure have yet to be sufficiently analysed and optimised with sustainability in mind. To remedy this, strategic partners XU and adesso are now offering the jointly developed online qualification programme Digital Sustainability by adesso, which imparts essential knowledge about sustainability in the IT sector. The four-hour interactive course is part of the XU School of Sustainability, established by XU together with climate action partners ClimatePartner and provided through XU’s online education and exchange platform (www.xu.de). The experiences of both partners from collaborating with other companies have shown that many employees and decision-makers lack the necessary knowledge to sufficiently incorporate sustainability into digital projects.

Digitalisation and sustainability in parallel

Digitalisation can help to achieve sustainability targets in many different industries, either through data-driven increases in efficiency or through digital innovations. Digital processes and technologies must be designed to be more sustainable to counteract any inverse effects in the transformation process.

Dr Christopher Jahns, CEO and founder of XU, describes the challenges involved: “Employees need to know and understand the potential pitfalls and the consequences of their day-to-day actions if they are to work on efficient solutions and rethink their mindset from a sustainability standpoint. Businesses are responsible for giving their workforce access to the necessary knowledge.”

IT service provider adesso has been leading the way on sustainability for some time, both internally and in client projects, and has made the topic is number one priority for 2023. Andreas Prenneis is a member of the adesso Executive Board and is responsible for sustainability. He believes that the range of courses available as part of adesso and XU’s Digital Sustainability programme is a good start to the company’s sustainability campaign:

“Software has been neglected in the past as a driver of sustainability, but we feel it offers the most leverage. We have condensed our sustainable IT expertise into this programme, giving businesses and their employees a kind of crash course in all of the relevant aspects of the topic. After completing the course, participants will have a handle on one of the important issues of our time and possess the skills to contextualise sustainability within their business environment and determine the necessary strategies and action plans to reduce their carbon footprint.”

Content for interactive learning

In the Digital Sustainability course, participants use interactive learning formats to recognise key correlations between digitalisation and sustainability. The modules convey the core knowledge to identify potential action plans and develop and implement measures. Course participants learn the driving forces, challenges and potential of utilising digital technologies in a business context, allowing them to actively push forward with sustainability at their companies. The course content is supplemented and reinforced by regular interactive live sessions with adesso experts.

adesso learning modules: from software development and design to circular IT

The six course modules developed by adesso cover the following topics:

  • 1. Digital sustainability driving forces, challenges and opportunities
  • 2. Sustainable design: making digital solutions sustainable
  • 3. Sustainable software engineering: selecting and rolling out technologies
  • 4. Operations: running digital solutions sustainably
  • 5. End of life: circular IT as a sustainable solution to e-waste
  • 6. Best practices: areas of action for digital sustainability transformation
