‘The agile approach with manageable sprints gave us the possibility to manage the project flexibly and in a controlled manner at all times. I have never seen an IT project that worked so well. We achieved our goal on time, on budget and within scope. I have personally never encountered such constructive, reliable and committed cooperation throughout the entire project team.’

Dr. Jan-Peter Horst I Member of the Management Board GEV

Challenge

These days, an insurance company’s web applications are the first point of contact for insurance customers and sales partners when it comes to applications, contracts and other services. GEV Grundeigentümer-Versicherung, which has specialised in the field of insurance concerning construction and housing since 1891, takes this customer expectation into account. In a strategically important project, the application architecture was realigned to meet the current requirements regarding sales processes and to have a solid basis for future expansion.

Solution

The new architecture has made some of GEV’s business processes concerning the support of sales partners significantly leaner and more efficient. When connecting brokers as well as comparison portals, great importance was attached to standardisation and achieving a high dark processing rate. Continuously dark processing applications without media disruptions contributes to a considerable reduction of the previous amount of effort needed for processing. In the course of the project, the number of applications that were processed using automation (‘dark’ processing) via comparison calculators was able to be increased by more than 60 per cent (as of June 2021).

‘The project represents a milestone in GEV’s technical organisation. Our digitalisation efforts have caused an increase in our customers’ and sales partners’ expectations of our systems, and with them, the importance of a flexible IT infrastructure. With the help of adesso’s expertise, we have developed a future-proof solution to address this issue.’

In order for portals to deliver real added value to insurance companies, all business processes must be integrated into their digital value chain. This is the only way modern insurers can react flexibly to market needs these days. In order to be able to recommend the best possible frontend architecture for the task, adesso conducted a study before the actual implementation project in which it evaluated various possible courses of action together with the customer. This phase was aided by the ‘Interaction Room’ workshop methodology in which an interdisciplinary team developed the guidelines for the project.

GEV modernised its applications as part of an agile software development project in which software architects from adesso worked in partnership with GEV’s development team. adesso also provided a project management team and Scrum Masters to lend constant support for the project. Depending on the situation at hand, dedicated technical and methodological experts were involved as needed to do things such as perform business analyses, implement test automations and run manual tests.
