The Background

Car buyers’ demands on their vehicles have increased in recent years. Special information and communication systems, central control units, individual user profiles: the proportion of software in vehicles has risen immensely and electronics is becoming increasingly important in the automotive industry. Large car manufacturers are able to secure their leading market positions by using smart IT concepts to fulfil these requirements.


The BMW Group has been working with adesso in this area for years. Together, the partners pursue the goal of achieving a consistently digital and agile organisation in order to be able to react flexibly and quickly to changing requirements and customer wishes on international markets.


adesso supports the BMW Group with the implementation and further development of agile working methods in order to transform the classic process-oriented organisational structures into units that are as proactive and responsive as possible. The use of agile methods is no longer limited to software projects, but also extends to the areas of procurement, development, logistics, production, sales and human resources. The BMW Group is striving to make its entire corporate and management culture more agile.

adesso services at a glance:

  • As part of the BMW Group’s agile transformation, the in-house IT department was aligned with agility aspects in mind.
  • Silos within the IT department and between IT and specialist departments were broken down and the foundations for optimised, cross-departmental collaboration were created.
  • Further training of numerous employees. For this purpose, special coaching measures for agile role profiles (such as Scrum Master, Agile Master or Product Owner) were developed for the BMW Group.
  • In these coaching and training sessions, adesso’s experienced transformation experts teach general as well as more specific skills for agile working – from the first sprint to the retrospective.
  • Training in agile methodology at the BMW Group in the areas of connected car technology, autonomous transport systems, order-to-delivery processes and logistics planning, financial services and infrastructure technologies.
  • Coaching measures also for larger initiatives and programmes with several hundred employees in agile structures using the agile scaling frameworks
    • LeSS (Large Scale Scrum Framework) or
    • SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework)
