Data Governance

Factor for success in a digitalised world

The cornerstone for a successful digitalisation project

Using data to realise the full potential of AI, ML and IoT

Digitalisation initiatives and innovative use cases in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and the Internet of Things (IoT) often lack a foundation of data on which to build. As a result, these projects fail or are unable to realise their full potential.

What makes for a good database is not just the amount of data it contains. The opposite is actually true. Companies can drown in data if there is too much of it. They need to find ways to keep track of what data is available, what information it contains and how they can access it. In addition to the amount of data and having an overview of data, the quality of the information is another important factor. Mechanisms are needed to ensure that the data is and remains reliable, consistent and trustworthy.

What is data governance?

Basically speaking, data governance is a catalogue of coordinated organisational and technical measures that governs how data is handling across the organisation. It is an expansive field, which is why data governance is divided into three areas:

Data organisation

The catalogue of rules described above is defined in the data organisation. These include, for example, roles, processes, responsibilities, tasks and corporate guidelines for handling data within the company.

Data management

Data management includes the implementation of the data organisation rules on an operational level. It involves managing the data life cycle, cataloguing data, measuring quality and monitoring compliance.

Data solutions

Data technologies include IT tools that support data management, a data platform or a data catalogue being one example of this. However, this could also include technical guidelines such as rights, privileges and system workflows that automate certain tasks in data management.

Riding the wave of success with data governance

Data governance allows companies to align their organisation with their strategic plans. Data governance is a helpful tool in data-based projects and supports you in reaching your objectives. It can also be used to drive sustainable improvements.

Digitalisation, AI, IoT, data mesh, data-based business models and process optimisation – whatever your goals and ideas for the future might be, the three areas of data governance can help to make them come true. This raises exciting questions that each company must answer for themselves:

  • What form does the collaboration take?
  • What are the right IT tools for data management?
  • How are operational and strategic decisions made?
  • How are quality, compliance, speed and innovation prioritised at the company?

Data governance is not an end in itself. What it does do is drive your company to become more successful.
