There are various reasons why many companies have a historically grown and heterogeneous IT landscape which is based on different technologies. This occurs for example when some departments in a company have a completely different focus than others: This entails the negative side-effect that each department works with isolated applications. Moreover, repeated changes in technology (enterprise architectures) and application landscapes resulting from acquisitions and mergers cause overlapping functionalities.

Under such circumstances the existing application landscape does very often not support the business processes in an optimal way. In order to achieve the company’s goals it is necessary to redefine and standardize the enterprise architecture.
